Lake Mburo is the only permanent lake entirely within Uganda’s national parks that supports scheduled boat safaris. The activity is coordinated primarily from Rwonyo, where both UWA and selected private lodges operate licensed boat trips.

Operator and Launch Point Information

Boat trips begin at the Uganda Wildlife Authority jetty near Rwonyo Headquarters. Most vessels are powered canoes or motorised steel boats with a seating capacity of 10 to 15 persons. The service is maintained year-round, but high water levels during March–May and October–November may affect timing.

The primary provider is Uganda Wildlife Authority. Mihingo Lodge and Rwakobo Rock can arrange trips for their guests but must coordinate with UWA due to vessel control protocols.

Duration and Departure Times

Each trip lasts approximately 90 minutes. Departures typically occur at:

  • 08:00
  • 11:00
  • 14:00
  • 16:30

Private departures outside these times are possible but subject to vessel availability and ranger schedules.

Species Visibility and Observation Zones

Boat safaris offer consistent viewing of:

  • Hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius), present in pods near papyrus inlets
  • Nile crocodile (Crocodylus niloticus), visible on exposed shorelines during morning hours
  • African fish eagle (Haliaeetus vocifer), often perched above fishing zones
  • Malachite kingfisher (Corythornis cristatus) and pied kingfisher (Ceryle rudis), frequent along reed banks
  • African finfoot (Podica senegalensis), rarely seen but occasionally observed near submerged roots
  • Water thick-knee, hammerkop, black-headed heron, and squacco heron

Vessels maintain a regulated distance from nesting or resting wildlife, especially in the breeding season (typically March through June).

Planning Considerations and Photographic Conditions

Afternoon departures between 16:30 and 18:00 offer the most favourable lighting angles for photography. Morning trips are better for species activity, particularly for birdwatchers. Tourists are advised to carry waterproof storage for electronics and a telephoto lens of at least 200 mm for avian subjects.

Safety equipment, including life jackets and communication radios, is available onboard. However, visitors may confirm availability before departure.

Booking Procedures and Pricing

Advance booking is not mandatory but is recommended during weekends and public holidays. Standard UWA fees (as of 2024):
